Collocations form part of formulaic language use that is considered by many scholars as central to communication (Henriksen 2013; Wray 2002). Today, most scholars agree that teaching collocations to second and/or foreign language users (henceforth "L2 students") is a must. This study offers a reflection on the directions L2 researchers and teachers may explore, and that could contribute to modelling the teaching of collocations or at least spark the debate on this issue. The fundamental point raised here is the extent to which pedagogy may be informed by knowing the most common lexical collocations (combinations of content words) and using frequency of collocates as a key factor in selecting which collocations to bring to learners' attention. The results from this study indicate that out of the eight different lexical collocations, adjective+noun and verb+noun collocations are the most common, and should therefore be introduced first. Furthermore, most collocates ("co-occurring words" in Sinclair's (1991) terms) come from the 1,000 and 2,000 most frequent words. Therefore, this study suggests that the same way that "[u]sing the computational approach as a starting point makes it possible to distinguish between collocations of varying frequency of use" (Henriksen 2013: 32), frequency may be used to select the target words and their collocates once collocations have been identified. This could potentially contribute to addressing the issue of selection criteria of which collocations to teach.

This article will take a historical perspective on the topic of text editing and highlight the following: (1) The origin and history of the Text Editing project and book productions in different languages (2003-2018) and (2) The latest programme developments from printed book to teaching with it, or learning from it and especially the development of a state-of-the-art training approach. In an attempt to evaluate whether these developments are defensible, also from the point of view of its users, a small-scale usability study was carried out among two groups of master's degree students (N = 37) who undertook inverted and/or flipped-blended-collaborative text editing. As inverting classrooms with blended materials (online and contact) and introducing a collaborative approach to learning are innovative within this domain, the question of the programme's effectiveness deserves central attention. Quantitative and qualitative student evaluation data (online Likert-scale questionnaire with open questions and critical evaluation reports) show that Text Editing is more than a well-founded theoretical guide or handbook. The programme is experienced as authentic and effective and has a high impact on the users' self-efficacy and professional profile. As such the project is sustainable.

A major problem that often occurs in Digital Forensics (DF) is the huge volumes of data that has to be searched, filtered, and indexed to discover patterns that could lead to forensic evidence. The nature of, and the process by which the data gets collected, implies that the data also contain information about persons that are not implicated, or only incidentally involved in the crime under investigation. Privacy is therefore an important issue that needs to be managed in a DF investigation. This paper shows that techniques used in the Team Formation (TF) task can be successfully applied to address both the problems of data volume and privacy. The TF task can be re-formulated to fit the DF arena: to commit a crime, the culprit(s) may require the assistance of several other individuals, which implies that a team of some sort gets established. During a post-mortem DF analysis, an investigator may only have one, or a few names to start with. One of the key challenges is finding possible co-conspirators. From a TF point of view, the culprit is trying to find the best team to commit the crime, given some constraints. The TF task in DF requires the recording of skill-sets, and the generation and/or discovery of a graph depicting interaction between candidates. If the data consist of an email corpus and peoples' roles in an organisation (such as in the Enron data), both of these are readily available. In this paper we consider the TF problem in general and extend it to the DF arena by considering the information that an investigator may have access to during the investigation. We also show that simple information retrieval and keyword extraction techniques (such as RAKE) can be used to automatically discover potential teams from the data, while preserving privacy; results from a series of experiments (using the new definitions of TF and the proposed information retrieval techniques) on the Enron data is then presented.

Objective To evaluate the effect of vouchers for maternity care in public health-care facilities on the utilization of maternal health-care services in Cambodia. Methods The study involved data from the 2010 Cambodian Demographic and Health Survey, which covered births between 2005 and 2010. The effect of voucher schemes, first implemented in 2007, on the utilization of maternal health-care services was quantified using a difference-in-differences method that compared changes in utilization in districts with voucher schemes with changes in districts without them. Findings Overall, voucher schemes were associated with an increase of 10.1 percentage points (pp) in the probability of delivery in a public health-care facility; among women from the poorest 40% of households, the increase was 15.6 pp. Vouchers were responsible for about one fifth of the increase observed in institutional deliveries in districts with schemes. Universal voucher schemes had a larger effect on the probability of delivery in a public facility than schemes targeting the poorest women. Both types of schemes increased the probability of receiving postnatal care, but the increase was significant only for non-poor women. Universal, but not targeted, voucher schemes significantly increased the probability of receiving antenatal care. Conclusion Voucher schemes increased deliveries in health centres and, to a lesser extent, improved antenatal and postnatal care. However, schemes that targeted poorer women did not appear to be efficient since these women were more likely than less poor women to be encouraged to give birth in a public health-care facility, even with universal voucher schemes.

Resumen Objetivo Evaluar el efecto de los bonos para atención sanitaria materna en centros de salud públicos sobre la utilización de los servicios de atención sanitaria materna en Camboya. Métodos El estudio incluyó datos de la Encuesta demográfica y sanitaria de Camboya del año 2010, que recolecta los nacimientos que tuvieron lugar entre 2005 y 2010. Se cuantificó el efecto de los sistemas de bonos, puestos en práctica por primera vez en el año 2007, sobre la utilización de los servicios de atención sanitaria materna por medio de un método de diferencia de diferencias que comparó los cambios en la utilización de dichos servicios en los distritos con sistemas de bonos respecto a los de los distritos sin sistemas de bonos. Resultados En general, los sistemas de bonos están asociados con a un aumento de 10,1 puntos porcentuales (pp) en la probabilidad de parto en un centro público de atención sanitaria; entre las mujeres del 40% de los hogares más pobres, el aumento fue de 15,6 pp. Los bonos fueron responsables de alrededor de una quinta parte del incremento observado en los partos institucionales en los distritos con programas. Los sistemas de bonos universales tuvieron un efecto mayor sobre la probabilidad de dar a luz en un centro público que los sistemas destinados a las mujeres más pobres. Ambos tipos de sistemas aumentaron la posibilidad de recibir atención postnatal, pero dicho incremento fue significativo solo para las mujeres que no eran pobres. Los sistemas de bonos universales no dirigidos a un grupo en concreto aumentaron notablemente la probabilidad de recibir atención prenatal. Conclusión Los sistemas de bonos aumentaron el número de partos en los centros de salud y, en menor medida, mejoraron la atención prenatal y postnatal. Sin embargo, los sistemas dirigidos a las mujeres más pobres no parecen ser eficientes, ya que estas mujeres ya tenían más probabilidades que las mujeres menos pobres de que se les animara a dar a luz en un centro público de atención sanitaria , incluso con los sistemas de bonos universales.

Résumé Objectif Évaluer l'effet des bons pour les soins de maternité dans les établissements publics de santé sur l'utilisation des services de santé maternelle au Cambodge. Méthodes L'étude a utilisé des données tirées de l'Enquête démographique et sanitaire du Cambodge de 2010, qui couvre les naissances ayant eu lieu entre 2005 et 2010. L'effet des programmes de bons, mis en œuvre au départ en 2007, sur l'utilisation des services de santé maternelle a été quantifié en utilisant la méthode des doubles différences, qui a comparé les variations d'utilisation dans les districts bénéficiant de programmes de bons avec les variations d'utilisation dans les districts sans programme de bons. Résultats En général, les programmes de bons étaient associés à une augmentation de 10,1 points de pourcentage (pp) de la probabilité d'accouchement dans un établissement public de soins de santé. Chez les femmes issues des 40% des ménages les plus pauvres, l'augmentation était de 15,6 pp. Les bons étaient responsables d'environ un cinquième de l'augmentation observée pour les accouchements dans les établissements des districts bénéficiant de programmes de bons. Les programmes de bons universels ont eu un effet plus important sur la probabilité d'accouchement dans un établissement public que les programmes ciblant les femmes les plus pauvres. Les deux types de programmes ont augmenté la probabilité de bénéficier de soins postnatals, mais cette augmentation était uniquement significative chez les femmes non pauvres. Le programme de bons universels et non ciblés a considérablement augmenté la probabilité de bénéficier de soins anténatals. Conclusion Les programmes de bons ont augmenté le nombre d'accouchements dans les centres de santé et, dans une moindre mesure, amélioré les soins anténatals et postnatals. Cependant, les programmes ciblant les femmes les plus pauvres n'ont pas paru efficaces, car ces femmes étaient plus susceptibles que les femmes moins pauvres d'être incitées à accoucher dans un établissement public de soins de santé, même avec des programmes de bons universels.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is classified within the family Hepeviridae, genus Hepevirus. HEV genotype 3 (Gt3) infections are endemic in pigs in Western Europe and in North and South America and cause zoonotic infections in humans. Several serological assays to detect HEV antibodies in pigs have been developed, at first mainly based on HEV genotype 1 (Gt1) antigens. To develop a sensitive HEV Gt3 ELISA, a recombinant baculovirus expression product of HEV Gt3 open reading frame-2 was produced and coated onto polystyrene ELISA plates. After incubation of porcine sera, bound HEV antibodies were detected with anti-porcine anti-IgG and anti-IgM conjugates. For primary estimation of sensitivity and specificity of the assay, sets of sera were used from pigs experimentally infected with HEV Gt3. For further validation of the assay and to set the cutoff value, a batch of 1100 pig sera was used. All pig sera were tested using the developed HEV Gt3 assay and two other serologic assays based on HEV Gt1 antigens. Since there is no gold standard available for HEV antibody testing, further validation and a definite setting of the cutoff of the developed HEV Gt3 assay were performed using a statistical approach based on Bayes' theorem. The developed and validated HEV antibody assay showed effective detection of HEV-specific antibodies. This assay can contribute to an improved detection of HEV antibodies and enable more reliable estimates of the prevalence of HEV Gt3 in swine in different regions.

OBJECTIVE: To develop two practical methods for measuring the affordability of medicines in developing countries. METHODS: The proposed methods - catastrophic and impoverishment methods - rely on easily accessible aggregated expenditure data and take into account a country's income distribution and absolute level of income. The catastrophic method quantifies the proportion of the population whose resources would be catastrophically reduced by spending on a given medicine; the impoverishment method estimates the proportion of the population that would be pushed below the poverty line by procuring a given medicine. These methods are illustrated by calculating the affordability of glibenclamide, an antidiabetic drug, in India and Indonesia. The results were validated by comparing them with the results obtained by using household micro data for India and Indonesia. FINDINGS: When accurate aggregate data are available, the proposed methods offer a practical way to obtain informative and accurate estimates of affordability. Their results are very similar to those obtained with household micro data analysis and are easily compared across countries. CONCLUSION: The catastrophic and impoverishment methods, based on macro data, can provide a suitable estimate of medicine affordability when the household level micro data needed to carry out more sophisticated studies are not available. Their usefulness depends on the availability of accurate aggregated data.

OBJETIVO: Desarrollar dos métodos prácticos para medir la asequibilidad de los medicamentos en los países en vías de desarrollo. MÉTODOS: Los métodos propuestos (métodos para medir los gastos catastróficos y el empobrecimiento) se basan en unos datos agregados fácilmente accesibles sobre el gasto y tienen en cuenta tanto la distribución de los ingresos del país como el nivel absoluto de ingresos. El método de gasto catastrófico cuantifica la proporción de la población cuyos recursos se verían reducidos de manera catastrófica si tuvieran que adquirir un medicamento determinado. El método del empobrecimiento calcula la proporción de la población que pasaría a encontrarse por debajo del umbral de la pobreza si comprara un medicamento determinado. Estos métodos se demuestran calculando la asequibilidad de la glibenclamida, un medicamento antidiabético, en India e Indonesia. Los resultados se refrendaron mediante su comparación con los resultados obtenidos empleando los microdatos para India e Indonesia. RESULTADOS: Cuando se dispone de datos agregados precisos, los métodos propuestos constituyen una forma práctica de obtener evaluaciones informativas y precisas sobre la asequibilidad. Sus resultados son muy similares a los obtenidos mediante los análisis de microdatos nacionales y resultan fáciles de comparar entre los diversos países. CONCLUSIÓN: Los métodos de gasto catastrófico y de empobrecimiento basados en macrodatos pueden ofrecer una evaluación adecuada de la asequibilidad de un medicamento cuando no se dispone de los microdatos necesarios a nivel nacional para desarrollar estudios más complejos. Su utilidad depende de la disponibilidad de unos datos agregados precisos.

OBJECTIF: Développer deux méthodes pratiques permettant de mesurer l'abordabilité des médicaments dans les pays en voie de développement. MÉTHODES: Les méthodes proposées (la méthode catastrophique et la méthode de l'appauvrissement) reposent sur des données de dépenses agrégées facilement accessibles et prennent en compte la répartition des revenus d'un pays ainsi que le niveau de revenu absolu. La méthode catastrophique quantifie la proportion de la population dont les ressources seraient réduites de manière catastrophique par une dépense pour un médicament donné. La méthode de l'appauvrissement estime la proportion de la population qui passerait sous le seuil de pauvreté en achetant un médicament donné. Ces méthodes sont illustrées par le calcul de l'abordabilité de la glibenclamide, un médicament antidiabétique, en Inde et en Indonésie. RÉSULTATS: Lorsque des données agrégées précises sont disponibles, les méthodes proposées offrent un moyen pratique d'obtenir des estimations informatives et précises sur l'abordabilité. Leurs résultats sont très similaires à ceux obtenus par l'analyse des micro-données des ménages et sont facilement comparables d'un pays à l'autre. CONCLUSION: La méthode catastrophique et la méthode de l'appauvrissement, basées sur les macro-données, peuvent offrir une estimation convenable de l'abordabilité des médicaments lorsque les micro-données des ménages nécessaires à des études plus poussées ne sont pas disponibles. Leur utilité dépend de la disponibilité de données agrégées précises.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to report on socioeconomic inequality in childhood malnutrition in the developing world, to provide evidence for an association between socioeconomic inequality and the average level of malnutrition, and to draw attention to different patterns of socioeconomic inequality in malnutrition. METHODS: Both stunting and wasting were measured using new WHO child growth standards. Socioeconomic status was estimated by principal component analysis using a set of household assets and living conditions. Socioeconomic inequality was measured using an alternative concentration index that avoids problems with dependence on the mean level of malnutrition. FINDINGS: In almost all countries investigated, stunting and wasting disproportionately affected the poor. However, socioeconomic inequality in wasting was limited and was not significant in about one third of countries. After correcting for the concentration index's dependence on mean malnutrition, there was no clear association between average stunting and socioeconomic inequality. The latter showed different patterns, which were termed mass deprivation, queuing and exclusion. Although average levels of malnutrition were higher with the new WHO reference standards, estimates of socioeconomic inequality were largely unaffected by changing the growth standards. CONCLUSION: Socioeconomic inequality in childhood malnutrition existed throughout the developing world, and was not related to the average malnutrition rate. Failure to tackle this inequality is a cause of social injustice. Moreover, reducing the overall rate of malnutrition does not necessarily lead to a reduction in inequality. Policies should, therefore, take into account the distribution of childhood malnutrition across all socioeconomic groups.

OBJETIVO: Informar sobre las desigualdades socioeconómicas en relación con la malnutrición infantil en el mundo en desarrollo, aportar evidencia demostrativa de una relación entre la desigualdad socioeconómica y el nivel medio de malnutrición y señalar a la atención diferentes modelos de desigualdad socioeconómica en materia de malnutrición. MÉTODOS: Se midieron el retraso del crecimiento y la emaciación utilizando los nuevos patrones de crecimiento infantil de la OMS. La situación socioeconómica se determinó mediante un análisis de componentes principales basado en un conjunto de bienes domésticos y condiciones de vida, y la desigualdad socioeconómica, mediante un índice de concentración alternativo que evita los problemas que plantea la dependencia del nivel medio de malnutrición. RESULTADOS: En casi todos los países investigados, los problemas de retraso del crecimiento y de emaciación afectaban desproporcionadamente a los pobres. Sin embargo, la desigualdad socioeconómica en cuanto a la emaciación era limitada y carecía de significación en aproximadamente una tercera parte de los países. Después de corregir para la dependencia del índice de concentración de la malnutrición media, no se observó una relación clara entre el retraso del crecimiento promedio y la desigualdad socioeconómica. Esta última mostró diversas pautas, descritas como privación masiva, colas y exclusión. Aunque los niveles promedio de malnutrición fueron mayores con los nuevos patrones de referencia de la OMS, las estimaciones de la desigualdad socioeconómica apenas se vieron afectadas al cambiar los patrones de crecimiento. CONCLUSIÓN La desigualdad socioeconómica en materia de malnutrición infantil, un problema extendido en el mundo en desarrollo, no está relacionada con la tasa promedio de malnutrición. El hecho de no afrontar dicho problema genera injusticia social. Además, la reducción de la tasa global de malnutrición no conduce necesariamente a una reducción de esa desigualdad. Por consiguiente, en las políticas al respecto se debe tener en cuenta la distribución de la malnutrición infantil entre todos los grupos socioeconómicos.

OBJECTIF: Dresser un rapport sur les inégalités socioéconomiques face à la malnutrition infantile dans le monde en développement, fournir des preuves d'une association entre ces inégalités et le niveau moyen de malnutrition et attirer l'attention sur les différents schémas d'inégalités socioéconomiques en matière de malnutrition. MÉTHODES: On a mesuré le retard de croissance et l'émaciation en utilisant les nouvelles normes OMS de croissance de l'enfant. On a estimé le statut socioéconomique par analyse des composantes principales en considérant une série de biens ménagers et de conditions de vie. On a mesuré les inégalités socioéconomiques avec un indice de concentration non conventionnel, évitant les problèmes de dépendance vis-à-vis du niveau moyen de malnutrition. RÉSULTATS: Dans presque tous les pays étudiés, le retard de croissance et l'émaciation touchaient de manière disproportionnée la population pauvre. Cependant, les inégalités socioéconomiques en matière de retard de croissance étaient limitées et n'étaient pas significatives dans un tiers des pays. Après correction pour la dépendance à l'égard de la malnutrition moyenne par l'indice de concentration, on n'a constaté aucune association claire entre retard de croissance moyen et inégalités socioéconomiques. Ces dernières obéissaient à différents schémas, désignés par les termes : privation massive, en attente de bénéficier de l'effet d'écoulement et exclusion. Même si l'on obtenait des valeurs plus élevées des niveaux moyens de malnutrition avec les nouvelles normes OMS, les estimations des inégalités socioéconomiques restaient dans une large mesure inchangées avec le passage aux nouvelles normes de croissance. CONCLUSION: Dans l'ensemble du monde en développement, il existe des inégalités socioéconomiques face à la malnutrition infantile qui ne sont pas liées au taux de malnutrition moyen. L'échec dans la réduction de ces inégalités est source d'injustice sociale. En outre, faire baisser le taux global de malnutrition ne permet pas nécessairement de réduire ces inégalités. Les politiques doivent donc prendre en compte la distribution de la malnutrition infantile parmi l'ensemble des groupes socioéconomiques.
